Add a billing payment method
If you didn't select a Shopify subscription plan and add a payment method when you first created your Shopify store, then you can add a new payment method with the following steps.
Steps:
From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Billing.
Click Billing profile.
Click Add payment method.
Depending on your available options, do one of the following:
- If only one payment method type is available, follow the on-screen steps to set it up.
- If multiple payment method types are available, select one from the Payment method type drop-down menu, and then follow the steps to set up and add your payment method.
Update a card payment method
We are not able to update information for existing payment cards. To update your payment card information, you'll need to add a new payment method of the same type, then delete the old one. Learn more about available payment methods.
Steps:
From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Billing.
Click Billing profile.
In the Payment methods section, click … > Add payment method in the payment card for the option you want to add.
Depending on your available options, do one of the following:
- If only one payment method type is available, follow the on-screen steps to set it up.
- If multiple payment method types are available, select one from the Payment method type drop-down menu, and then follow the steps to set up and add your payment method.
Adding a backup payment method
If you have multiple payment methods set up in your Shopify admin, then Shopify automatically sets a backup payment method for you. Shopify uses the backup payment method when your primary payment method can't be charged. You can add multiple payment methods of the same type so that you have flexibility in setting up backup payment methods. For example, you can add multiple credit cards and designate one as your primary and others as backups.
Managing your primary and backup payment methods
If you have three or more payment methods set up in your Shopify admin, then you can choose which one to use as your main payment method and which one to use as a backup payment method. The following are examples of ways you can manage your payment methods in your store's Billing profile:
- Set a primary payment method: Click …, and then click Make primary to set a payment method as your new primary payment method.
- Remove a payment method: Click …, and then click Delete to remove any payment methods that you no longer want to use.
- Add a payment method: If it's available as an option, then you can click Add payment method to add a new payment method on your account.
If you have only two payment methods set up in your Shopify admin, then you can switch between them. When you switch your backup payment method to be the new primary payment method, the previous primary method automatically becomes your backup method.
Considerations when using backup payment methods
If you meet one or more of the following conditions, then you can't add a backup payment method. Review the following considerations:
- Your store is on the Plus plan.
- You make manual payments.
- You have only one other payment method, that is your Shopify Balance card.
Delete an additional payment method
To delete a payment method, you need to have another payment method on file, such as a credit card or PayPal account. If you have only one payment method on file, then you can't delete it.
Steps:
From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Billing.
Click Billing profile.
In the Payment methods section, click …, and then click Delete for the payment method that you want to delete.
Click Delete.
Change your billing address
If you change the address that's associated with your credit card or co-branded debit card, then update your billing information.
Steps:
From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Billing.
Click Billing profile.
In the Payment methods section, click …, and then click Replace for the credit card or co-branded debit card payment method that you want to change the billing address for.
In the Replace credit card dialog, enter the required information, including your new billing address.
Click Replace credit card.
