Legacy manual collections

A manual collection includes the specific products that you choose. The collection will always contain the same products unless you add or remove them. Before you update a collection, you can review the top of the page to ensure no other staff are making changes to the same collection.

Plan requirements for creating manual collections

The Starter plan doesn't support grouping your products into collections to make it easier for customers to find them by category. If you require the ability to create collections, then you need to upgrade to a higher plan such as Basic, Grow, Advanced, or Shopify Plus. Learn more about the different plan features.

Create a manual collection

You can create a manual collection and add products to the collection. If the collection is available to your online store, then you can change the order in which the products are displayed from the collection page.

You can add only entire products to a legacy manual collection. You can add variants to a collection only with the new collections model.

If you don't want to publish the collection as soon as you create it, then you can set a specific date when the collection will be published to your online store. Learn more about future publishing.

Steps:

Desktop

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products > Collections.

  2. Click Add collection.

  3. Enter a title and description for the collection.

  4. In the Collection type section, click Manual.

  5. Click Save.

  6. In the Products section, search for products or click Browse, and then add the products that you want to have in the collection.

  7. Set the sort order for how you want the products to be sorted in your store.

  8. Optional: The Search engine listing section displays a preview of how the collection will be displayed in search results. If you want to edit this information, then click the pencil icon.

  9. In the Sales channels section, click the Adjust icon to select the sales channels where you want your collection to be available.

  10. In the Collection image section, click Add image to upload an image for the collection. For information about the sizes of images that you can use, refer to Product Media Types.

  11. Click Save.

  12. Add a link to your collection in your online store menus so that customers can find and view the collection.

Mobile

  1. From the Shopify app, tap the Menu icon.

  2. In the Products menu, tap the arrow down icon, and then tap Collections.

  3. Tap the + button.

  4. Enter a title and description for the collection.

  5. Optional: Tap the image icon to upload an image for the collection.

  6. Make sure that Smart collection is deactivated.

  7. Optional: In the Sales channels section, tap Edit to customize which sales channels the collection will be visible to. By default, the new collection will be available to all of your sales channels. Deselect any channels that you want to hide the collection from.

  8. In the Products section, add the products that you want to include in the collection. Learn more about adding products to a collection.

  9. Tap ✓ to save.

  10. Optional: Tap Sort by to select the order in which the collection's products are displayed in your online store.

  11. Add a link to your collection in your online store menus so that customers can find and view the collection.

Add products to a manual collection

Desktop

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products > Collections.

  2. Click the name of the collection that you want to add products to.

  3. In the Products section, search for products or click Browse, and then add the products that you want to have in the collection.

  4. Click Save.

Mobile

  1. From the Shopify app, tap the Menu icon.

  2. In the Products menu, tap the arrow down icon, and then tap Collections.

  3. Tap the collection that you want to add products to.

  4. In the Products section, tap Edit. If the collection doesn't have any products yet, then tap Add products instead.

  5. Check the products that you want to include in the collection.

  6. When you've selected all the products that you want to include, tap Save or ✓..

Add a product to existing collections from its details page

You can add a product to one or more existing manual collections from the product's details page.

Steps:

Desktop

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products.

  2. Click the product that you want to add to a collection.

  3. In the Collections section, select one or more existing collections.

  4. Click Save to add the product to all the selected collections.

Mobile
  1. From the Shopify app, tap the Products icon .
  2. Tap the product that you want to add to a collection.
  3. Tap Collections.
  4. Check each collection that you want to include the product. You can check only the manual collections, not the smart collections.
  5. Tap the back button to return to the product details screen.
  6. Tap Save or ✓.

Remove products from a manual collection

Desktop

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products > Collections.

  2. Click the name of the collection that you want to update.

  3. In the Products section, click the x beside every product that you want to remove from your collection. This doesn't delete the product from Shopify.

  4. Click Save.

Mobile

  1. From the Shopify app, tap the Menu icon.

  2. In the Products menu, tap the arrow down icon, and then tap Collections.

  3. Tap the collection that you want to remove products from.

  4. In the Products section, tap Edit.

  5. Uncheck the products that you want to remove from the collection.

  6. When you've deselected all the products that you want to remove, tap ✓ to save.

Change the publish date of a collection

You can set a specific publishing date for a collection to become available in your online store.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products > Collections.

  2. Click a collection.

  3. In the Sales channels section, click the calendar icon beside Online Store.

  4. Set the date and time that you want to publish the collection.

  5. Click Save.

Duplicate a collection

You can duplicate an existing manual collection, including the title, description, image, and product list.

When you duplicate a collection, the new collection that you create has the text (copy) added to the end of the title. The new collection isn't automatically included in any sales channels.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products > Collections.

  2. Click the collection that you want to duplicate.

  3. Click Duplicate.

  4. Edit the Title of the new collection.

  5. Optional: Make any necessary changes to the Description, Image, Products, or other parts of the collection.

  6. To publish the new collection to your sales channels, click the Adjust icon.

  7. In the dialog, select the sales channels where you want to publish the collection.

  8. Click Done.

  9. Click Save.

Delete a collection

Steps:

Desktop

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products > Collections.

  2. Click the name of the collection that you want to delete.

  3. Click Delete collection.

  4. Click Delete collection in the confirmation box to delete the collection.

Links to deleted collections are automatically removed from online store menus. You can also delete more than one collection at the same time using a bulk action.

Mobile

  1. From the Shopify app, tap the Menu icon.

  2. In the Products menu, tap the arrow down icon, and then tap Collections.

  3. Tap the collection that you want to delete.

  4. Tap the ⋮ button.

  5. Tap Delete collection.

  6. Tap Delete to confirm.
