Applying discounts in Shopify POS

You can apply the following types of discounts to orders in Shopify POS:

  • You can create discount codes in your Shopify admin, which are then applied by entering the code at checkout in Shopify POS.
  • You can create automatic discounts in your Shopify admin. These are automatically applied to individual items or to an entire order.
  • Staff can create custom discounts in Shopify POS when an order is being placed.

Using line item custom discounts in Shopify POS

A line item discount, also known as a product-specific discount, is a discount that's applied to a single product in an order.

Apply a line item custom discount

Steps

  1. From the Shopify POS app, tap the item in the cart.
  2. Optional: To apply a discount to multiple items, tap the relevant items, or to apply a discount to all items, tap an item and then tap Select all.
  3. Tap Apply custom discount.
  4. Tap Percentage or Amount.
  5. Optional: If you want to set the final discounted price for the item, then you can use the Price after discount field.
  6. Enter the discount in the field, and then tap Apply.

The product price in the cart updates when the discount is applied. The regular retail value of the product displays under the discounted price.

Edit a line item custom discount

  1. From the POS cart, tap the name of the product that has a custom discount.
  2. Tap Edit custom discount.
  3. Edit the discount, and then tap Apply.

Remove a line item custom discount

  1. From the POS cart, tap the name of the product that has a custom discount.
  2. Tap Edit custom discount.
  3. Tap Clear.
  4. Tap Apply.

Using cart custom discounts in Shopify POS

You can create a cart custom discount when an order is being placed and apply the discount to all items in the order. A cart custom discount can be a percentage amount or a fixed value.

You can add an Apply discount tile to your smart grid to quickly apply, edit, and remove cart custom discounts.

Cart custom discounts change the total displayed in the cart. The regular retail price of the order displays under the subtotal.

Apply a cart custom discount

  1. To apply a custom discount to a cart, complete one of the following actions:

    • Tap the Apply discount tile in your smart grid.
    • From the POS cart, tap More actions, and then tap Apply discount.

  2. Tap Apply custom order discount.

  3. Tap Percentage or Amount.

  4. Enter the discount in the field, and then tap Apply.

Edit a cart custom discount

  1. To edit a cart custom discount, complete one of the following actions:

    • Tap the Manage discounts tile in your smart grid.
    • From the POS cart, tap More actions, and then tap Manage discounts.

  2. Tap Edit custom order discount.

  3. Edit the discount, and then tap Apply.

Remove a cart custom discount

  1. To remove a cart custom discount, complete one of the following actions:

    • Tap the Manage discounts tile in your smart grid.
    • From the POS cart, tap More actions, and then tap Manage discounts.

  2. Tap Remove all.

  3. Tap Remove all discounts.

Combining custom discounts in Shopify POS

You can combine custom discounts in the following ways:

  • A percentage discount on a line item, on the cart, or on both.
  • A monetary discount on a line item, on the cart, or on both.
  • A combination of line item discounts and one cart discount.

If you create a combination discount, then the monetary line item discount is applied before the percentage cart discount.

The following example explains how a combination discount is applied to a product in the cart:

  • The original price is $20 USD.
  • You apply a monetary line item discount of $5 USD, so the price becomes $15 USD.
  • You apply a 10% cart discount to that amount, which equals $1.50 USD.
  • The customer's final price for that product is $15 USD − $1.50 USD = $13.50 USD.

Selling multiple quantities of a discounted item

If you set a line item custom discount as a monetary amount, then the discount is applied per unit for that line item.

The following example explains how a monetary amount for a custom line item discount applies to multiple quantities in the cart:

  • The product is priced at $20 USD, and the quantity of the product is 2, so the line item total before the discount is 2 × $20 USD = $40 USD.
  • You enter $5 USD as the monetary amount for the line item custom discount.
  • The discount applies as $5 USD per product unit, so 2 × $5 USD = $10 USD off the line item total.
  • The customer is charged $40 USD − $10 USD = $30 USD.

Using discount codes in Shopify POS

If you have fixed value or percentage discount codes that you created in your Shopify admin, then you can apply a discount code to orders in Shopify POS, provided that the items in the POS cart meet the discount code's requirements. Discount codes can't be applied to exchanges in Shopify POS.

You can add an Apply discount tile to your smart grid to quickly apply and remove discount codes.

Apply a discount code to a POS order

  1. To apply a discount code to a POS order, complete one of the following actions:

    • Tap the Apply discount tile in your smart grid.
    • From the POS cart, tap More actions, and then tap Apply discount.

  2. Enter the discount code in the field.

  3. Tap Apply.

Remove a discount code from a POS order

  1. To remove a discount code from a POS order, complete one of the following actions:

    • Tap the Manage discounts tile in your smart grid.
    • From the POS cart, tap More actions, and then tap Manage discounts.

  2. Tap Remove all.

  3. Tap Remove all discounts.

Applying a discount using a QR code in Shopify POS

You can download a shareable QR code for a discount you have created in the Discounts section of your Shopify admin.

You can share the QR code in emails to your customers or include it on your receipts. Learn how to add an asset to your receipt template.

When a customer presents the QR code at your retail location, staff can scan it to apply the discount to the POS cart.

Steps:

  1. In Shopify POS, add products to the cart that are eligible for the discount.
  2. To apply the discount to the cart, do either of the following actions:

The discount is automatically applied to the cart when the QR code is valid and the cart meets the discount's requirements.
