Location management

A location is a physical place or an app where you do any or all the following activities: sell products, ship or fulfill orders, or stock inventory. A location might be a retail store, warehouse, popup, or dropshipper. With multiple locations, you have better visibility into your inventory across your business.

Most location management is handled from your Shopify admin. From there, you can add, delete, edit, and activate or deactivate your locations as needed. You can also manage your POS subscriptions from your Shopify admin.

If you manage multiple POS devices across your business, then review the Mobile Device Management overview to learn how MDM software helps you manage POS devices across all of your locations, such as controlling when app updates happen.

Select Shopify POS device location

You can manage your device locations directly in the Shopify POS app. You can also restrict access to the locations settings on the iPad by activating limited staff permissions.

Whenever you install the Shopify POS app on a device, make sure that you select your location so that the correct tax rates are applied.

Steps:

  1. From Shopify POS, tap Horizontal menu > Settings.
  2. Scroll down to the Location section, and then tap the name of the current POS location.
  3. Tap the name of the location you want to switch to, and then tap Switch or tap Cancel to go back.

Manage the POS subscription plan for each location

If you're the account owner, then you can select your POS subscriptions by location to ensure that your stores have the subscription that best suits their needs. If you're on the Retail, Basic, Grow, or Advanced plans, then you can also choose between a monthly or yearly billing cycle. If you're on the Shopify Plus plan, then you can only choose a 30-day billing cycle.

The default in-person selling features included in your paid plan can be used with any Shopify plan at no extra cost. For an additional monthly cost per location, the Shopify POS Pro subscription plan has extra retail features for sales transactions, inventory management, sales reports, and staff management.

If you want to transfer your POS Pro subscription from one location to another, then you need to contact Shopify Support.

If you have subscribed to POS Pro and you want to uninstall the POS sales channel, then you need to downgrade all of your POS Pro locations before you uninstall the channel.

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Point of Sale.

  2. Click Settings > POS Pro Subscription.

List a location as a physical store

You can list a location as a physical store. This lets customers find the store through the Shop sales channel.

The following considerations apply to listing locations as a physical store:

  • You don't need to use Shopify POS to list a location as a physical store.
  • If you use a location to test Shopify POS, then you don't need to list this location as a physical store.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Locations.

  2. Click the location that you want to list as a physical store.

  3. In the Physical storefront section, activate the "List this location as a physical store to help customers find it" setting.

  4. Click Save.

If you want to unlist a location as a physical store, then deactivate the "List this location as a physical store to help customers find it" setting, and then click Save.
