Create a new data exploration
Creating a new data exploration is available to merchants on all Shopify plans. Using Shopify Analytics, you can create a custom report in the following ways:
- Build a custom report from an empty exploration state.
- Modify an existing default report.

Create a new custom report from an empty state
You can create a new report from any of the following places in the Shopify admin:
- In Analytics > Reports, click New exploration.
- When customizing the Analytics dashboard, click New exploration in the dashboard library.
Creating a new report begins an empty data exploration. You must add at least 1 metric to begin your data exploration.
Steps:
Desktop
- From your Shopify admin, go to Analytics > Reports.
Click New exploration.
Use any of the following tools to build your report:
- In the ShopifyQL query editor, add a query by doing any of the following actions:
- Write a query using ShopifyQL and then click ▹ Run.
- To have Sidekick generate the report query for you, click
What do you want to explore? and describe the report that you want.
- In the configuration panel, manually select your report data:
- Select your preferred exploration method from the
or
tabs.
- In the Metrics menu, click ⊕ to add the first metric to your exploration.
- Add additional metrics, dimensions, a comparison, and filters to display the information that you want to include in your report. You can also click the Visualization menu to select a different visualization for your data.

- In the ShopifyQL query editor, add a query by doing any of the following actions:
After you create your report, click Save.
Mobile
From the Shopify app, tap the
icon.
In the Analytics menu, tap the
icon, and then tap Reports.
Tap
+.Use any of the following tools to build your report:
- In the ShopifyQL query editor, add a query by doing any of the following actions:
- Tap
and then write a query using ShopifyQL, and then tap ▹.
- To have Sidekick generate the report query for you, tap

to open the configuration panel, and then select an Exploration method and tap ⊕ to add metrics, dimensions, a comparison, and filters to display the information that you want to include in your report. Tap the
icon to remove a metric. You can also tap the Visualization menu to select a different visualization for your data.
- In the ShopifyQL query editor, add a query by doing any of the following actions:
After you create your report, tap Save.
In the Save report dialog, give your custom report a name, and then tap Save.
Create a custom report by modifying an existing default report
If you modify a default report authored by Shopify, then it's considered a custom report.
Steps:
Desktop
- From your Shopify admin, go to Analytics > Reports.
Click the name of the default report that you want to customize.
Use any of the following tools to customize the report:
- In the ShopifyQL query editor, click
and then do any of the following actions: * Modify the existing query using ShopifyQL and then click ▹ Run. * To have Sidekick customize the report query for you, click
Refine query and then describe the customization that you want.
- In the configuration panel, do any of the following actions:
* Select your preferred exploration method from the
or
tabs. * Add or remove metrics, dimensions, a comparison, and filters to display the information that you want to include in your report. * Optional: Click the Visualization menu to select a different visualization for your data.
- In the ShopifyQL query editor, click
After you modify your report, click Save as.
In the Save copy as new report dialog, give your custom report a name, and then click Save copy.
Mobile
From the Shopify app, tap the
icon.
In the Analytics menu, tap the
icon, and then tap Reports.
Tap the name of the default report that you want to customize.
Use any of the following tools to customize the report:
- In the ShopifyQL query editor, tap
