Quick reference - processing a sale
Use this quick reference to help process sales transactions in Shopify POS. This page gives you an overview of common tasks, so you can add items, charge fees, and accept payments smoothly when selling to customers in person.

Add an item to the cart
If you have multiple locations, then only the products stocked at your Shopify POS device’s assigned location are available in the products view.
If you have an app installed using POS UI Extensions to collect additional information about a product, then you can sell different configurations of the same product, within the same cart. For example, customized picture frame sizes or multiple coffee orders with different names.
Steps:
From Shopify POS, tap the
icon.
In the search bar, type the name of the product.
Tap the product.
If a product has variants, then tap the variant.
The product is added to the cart.
Add a custom sale item to the cart
If a customer wants to buy an item but you can't find it in the Shopify POS app, then you can still sell it to them by creating a custom sale item. To use custom sales, you need to add the Add custom sale tile to your smart grid.
Steps:
- From your smart grid, tap the Add custom sale tile.
- Add the price.
- Optional: Add a title and adjust the quantity.
- Tap Add to cart.
You can now complete the sale or add other items to the cart.
Add a custom fee
You can add custom fees, such as charges for local delivery or customization fees, to a customer's cart. You can save preset custom fee tiles to your smart grid. Only one custom fee can be applied to a cart. To add multiple fees, add the total amount as a single custom fee.
Steps:
- From your smart grid, tap the Custom fee tile.
- Review the amount, and then tap save.
To remove a custom fee, tap the Remove fee tile in your smart grid.
Apply a custom cart discount
You can apply custom discounts or discount codes to the cart by adding an Apply discount tile to your smart grid.
Steps
- From your smart grid, tap the Apply discount tile.
- Tap Percentage, Amount, or Code.
- Fill in the fields, and then tap Save.
Cart discounts change the total displayed in the cart. The regular retail price of the order displays under the subtotal.
Apply a custom line-item discount
- From the Shopify POS app, tap the item in the cart.
- Optional: To apply a discount to multiple items, tap the relevant items, or to apply a discount to all items, tap an item and then tap Select all.
- Tap Apply custom discount.
- Tap Percentage or Amount.
- Optional: If you want to set the final discounted price for the item, then you can use the Price after discount field.
- Enter the discount in the field, and then tap Apply.
The product price in the cart updates when the discount is applied. The regular retail value of the product displays under the discounted price.
Remove the tax on an item
You can remove the tax from an item that you're selling. You might need to do this if the customer has tax-exempt status or if tax isn't applicable to the item.
Steps:
- Add the item to the cart.
- Tap the item.
- Tap the tax to remove it.
Reprint a receipt
From Shopify POS, tap the
icon.
Tap the order that you want to print a receipt for.
Tap Receipt > Print receipt.
Print a gift receipt for a completed sale
You can print a gift receipt for a completed sale.
Steps:
- From Shopify POS, tap Orders.
- Tap the order that you want to print a gift receipt for.
- Tap Print gift receipt.
Email cart details to a customer
From the Shopify POS checkout, add the customer's choice of products to the cart.
Optional: Customize the cart as needed.
When you're ready to send the email, tap
> Send cart.
Enter the customer's email address.
Optional: Enter a message that will be included in the email.
Tap Send.
Lock the iPad screen
Locking the screen when you step away from your iPad is a good security practice.
To lock the screen, from Shopify POS, tap the icon.
